Don't Be Afraid of The Dark
I am happy to announce that Fresh from the Grave will be a series designed to get out a good review of a horror movie that this blogger has seen on the big screen. So its gives me great pleasure to present to you the first creature of the night to rise from their grave, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark!
So before I open the casket and unleash this creature feature, I have to say that I had no idea Don't Be Afraid of The Dark was a remake and had such a lasting impression on Mr. Del Torro. However it doesn't surprise me considering that the creatures in Don't Be Afraid of The Dark make a cameo in Hellboy 2, but more on that later. With that being said, I went into this actually quite excited. The trailer really left alot to wonder, which sometimes in horror films can be a curse and a blessing. So the plot is as follows: Little girl moves into a creepy house with her dad(and his girlfriend),she hates it, then they discover creatures in a hidden room living in a hole covered by a furnace. From there stuff gets crazy intense.
This film stood out also to me because not only did it have Guy Pierce(who I thought was a homeless man after the Time Machine), but it also has Katie Holmes, who hasn't done a horror film since Disturbing Behavior. I will go on record and say that I thought Katie did an awesome job in her role. The you girl would played the daughter Sally(insert name here) was also very good in her role. At first I was kind of worried that her presence would make the film a little weak, but truthfully she did an excellent job.
So before I we talk about story, I want to talk about the creatures in the film. As I stated earlier, the first time I had heard about these creatures was in Hellboy 2. Del Torro uses his writing chops to bring them back here, but in a far more frighting way. Director Troy Nixey in my view captures the vision that Del Torro puts in front of him. The story itself is great and eerie, and at first I was wondering when the action was going to hit the screen, but after thinking about it, I realized that a story was being told and I should just enjoy it. The pacing might come across to some as slow, but in my opinion, its the time spent on the family that makes this movie work.In conclusion, check it out because its old school horror story telling at its finest. In the near future, I will review the older movie and offer my thoughts on that for now, but I can't stress enough that this movie is worth your hard earned money! So until next time ghouls stay frightened and stiff...
